Summer Hardship Fund

This fund is aimed at continuing, home students enrolled on a full-time time course, who may be experiencing financial difficulties over the long summer holiday.

As with other university hardship funds, applications are carefully considered on a case by case basis and assessed on your personal circumstances.

If you are made an award, it is paid to you direct from the university and you do not have to pay it back.

Overview

About this fund

The Summer Fund is a non-repayable grant awarded to students who are in financial difficulty and may need extra support towards their living costs over the long summer vacation.

You can still apply for this fund if you have already received the Student Support Fund during the academic year.

How are applications assessed?

Applications are assessed based on individual need and personal financial circumstances and considered on a case by case basis. However, as resources are limited, priority will be given to students who fulfil certain criteria listed under ‘Who is eligible’. Evidence will be required to support your application.

Who is eligible

You are eligible to apply for the Summer Fund if you are a full-time, continuing, undergraduate student fully enrolled on a standard length course and due to progress in September 2025.

Priority will be given to students who can demonstrate any of the following circumstances:

  • You are a lone parent
  • You have caring responsibilities - for a partner or immediate family member
  • You have health issues or a disability which may restrict your capacity to work over the long summer vacation
  • You are in receipt of the Estranged Students Bursary or Care Leavers Bursary in 2024-25 academic year.

If you do not fulfil the priority criteria and you have unusual circumstances you can still make an application, so please tell us as much as you can in your cover letter and provide relevant supporting evidence.

Some health science students are not eligible for the Summer Fund, but may still be able to apply to the Student Support Fund until Friday 11 July if they have not already submitted an application this academic year.

Please phone 01273 642888 or email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk for more information, and please provide your student number.

How to apply

There is a short application form to complete and you need to provide supporting evidence such as bank statements, rent or mortgage liability, DWP benefits and a covering letter fully explaining your reasons for applying.

Please contact the Student Money Advice team by phone 01273 642888 or email studentadvice@brighton.ac.uk to request a form. Once you have completed the form and gathered the required evidence, you can email your completed form and scanned evidence back to the Funds team direct: funds@brighton.ac.uk.

Please submit your application and all supporting evidence before midnight on 11 July 2025.

We will contact you by email, using your university account and we aim to respond within 14 days of receipt of your application.

All awards will be made before the end of July.
