Living Labs: Real People, Real Tech, Better Ageing

Wednesday 1 October 6pm at the Bevy Community Pub as part of the Healthy Ageing Festival, °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ.

Speaker: Dr Theo Fotis

Discover how 'Living Labs' are helping older adults shape digital tools for better health and independence. Dr Theo Fotis shares real-life stories, co-designed solutions, and practical tips to help you explore the technologies that support wellbeing in later life.

More and more, health services and technologies are being designed with people rather than for them. Co-design in healthcare, where patients, carers, professionals, and communities work together, is now widely °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ as the best way to develop services that truly meet people’s needs.

This presentation explores how we innovate together with older adults in real life settings, called ‘Living Labs’, to co-create and test digital health solutions. These ‘labs’ allow us to learn from the lived experiences of older people and use their insights to shape better tools for selfcare, healthy ageing, and independent living.

Theo will share stories from these collaborations, showcase how everyday technology can support wellbeing in later life, and offer ideas on how to explore and identify the right digital tools that work for individuals.

is a Reader in Digital Health and Innovation Research and leads a number of community based Digital Health Living Labs across the South East, focusing on codesign and real world testing of digital health solutions.

Wednesday 5 November 2025 6pm at the Bevy Community Pub (postponed from 2024)

Speaker: Paul Levy

It was late 2022 when we all started hearing about something called Chat GPT.

Artificial intelligence has been around for decades but it was generative AI that really hit the headlines. Suddenly we could talk to AI and AI could do all kinds of things for us and even instead of us.

  • Will AI replace the jobs we are currently doing?
  • Is it all hype what is the truth that the heart of the rise of AI?
  • How does AI actually work?
  • What are the benefits of AI and what skills do we need in a world increasingly defined by it?

This interactive session is led by Paul Levy from the University of °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ, whose recent research has focused on digital innovation, the skills of digital management and the rise of disruptive innovation including cryptocurrencies and Blockchain Technology.

We will take a very practical look at artificial intelligence, get online, see what it really can and cannot do, try and break into it, identify the benefits but also the risks and take a look at the future.
