  • Best Interests Assessor CPD module

Best Interests Assessor qualification CPD module (20 credits)

This module provides the necessary training for relevant health and social care professionals to develop the specialist knowledge and skills required for practising as a Best Interest Assessor, in the context of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (2007).

Key to learning is exploration of human rights, equality, social justice, diversity, discrimination and oppression. Students will learn how to apply relevant law in practice, including the associated Code of Practice, and how to complete the required statutory paperwork that accompanies assessments made under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.

University teaching typically takes the form of workshop-style lectures which offer you the opportunity to take an active role in your learning whilst working closely with other students. These are facilitated by academic staff, solicitors, practising BIAs, representatives from IMCA organisations and other professionals, with input from people with lived experience.

The course operates in partnership with local authorities who support and fund students to attend the course. Independent applicants (students who are not funded by their employing body) are welcome to apply but at the point of application you must have a written agreement from a local authority agreeing to provide you with the opportunity to do an observed assessment with a qualified BIA. See application pack for more details.

Content and delivery

The module is taught in person over eight days across a three-week period, usually in March each year. It takes place at the University of °ÅÀÖÊÓƵ Moulsecoomb campus.

During the module, learners will participate in small group work and larger group discussions, designed to enhance their ability to critically engage with material.

Learners are supported to critically reflect upon and appraise complex information in relation to the process of undertaking an assessment as a Best Interest Assessor and to articulate the role of Best Interest Assessment.

Assessment

Learners will write a 2,500 word reflective essay based on an observed best interests assessment. Additionally, learners will be asked to submit an annotated BIA Form 3 (ADASS) which will evidence their ability to critically analyse and appraise information informing decision-making.

The assignments are designed to enable learners to evidence their understanding and ability to apply relevant legislation, considering the necessary Code of Practice, case law and other practice guidance concerned with Deprivation of Liberty Safeguarding Assessments.

How to apply
